Fabulous Frosh

Much has been made of the 2 star freshman in college basketball this year, we all know their names. Everyone has been on the Greg Oden bandwagon since he was in high school. He's probably the 2nd best thing to ever come out of Buffalo, NY, right after the Gus Macker. My buddy Jim could come up with a list of about 20 of the greatest things that he believes all originated fromBuffalo, which would include the wings(correct), hot girls(maybe correct), Labatt Blue(incorrect), pizza(yes he really believes that) but definitely not Greg Oden. The other precocious freshman, Kevin Durant, has been the Bill Simmons' pet prodigy since the season began. I don't think you'll find many arguments that these 2 have been the most impactful 1st year players since Carmelo took Syracuse to the national championship.

What hasn't been discussed nearly enough is the impact that so many other freshman in the nation have had. Off the top of my head, Mike Conley Jr., Brandan Wright, Ty Lawson, and Taj Gibson are all on teams still playing in the tournament and have arguably had a bigger impact in college than Oden. Durant has been on another level this entire year, but is he head and shoulders above Brandan Wright as an NBA prospect? 6'10 small forwards that can go off the dribble and have range like Durant are very, very rare. But as Sports Guy was so quick to criticize Rick Barnes for not posting Durant up against USC, maybe it was Durant that was hesitant to go inside. Obviously the immediate comparison for Durant is Kevin Garnett, but I see a lot of Lamar Odom in him as well. This is not a bad thing, and I'd love for him to end up on the Celtics. But is he really that far advanced, that any team should even consider taking him instead of a possible franchise center? Looking far into the future I see the draft shaping up as Oden, Durant at 1-2 and some variation of Wright, Horford, Noah, and Julian Wright following. It reminds me very much of the Lebron, Darko, Melo draft. Three "franchise" guys at the top, followed by pretty good players named Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade. Let's throw Darko out of that mix. Lebron and Oden are two of the most hyped prospects of all time, Durant and Melo had very similar freshman years. Bosh was a freshman star, just like Wright but overshadowed by another marquee freshman. Noah and Horford are proven college guys who either could possibly have gone #1 in the draft last year. So while everyone is hoping to get the #1 or 2 pick in this years draft, I think the #1 is that much more valuable. Oden and Lebron are rare players that come along once every 5-10 years. The gap between Oden and Durant's pro potential, is much greater than between Durant and B. Wright and even Horford or Noah.

Some weekend picks:

Butler will make a run against the Gators, thanks to Smurph Baggins' second favorite player left in the tourney, AJ Graves. Contrary to prior comments, Graves and Smurph Baggins bear no facial resemblance. In fact, once again for anyone that missed the comments earlier in the week, Smurph Baggins looks strikingly similar to the man dubbed "Brad Pitt with a jump shot", Nate Funk. Anyway, Butler falls by 10 because the Gators make their foul shots in the end.

Oregon beats UNLV because I love Aaron Brooks and that this is everyone's upset special. I expect Brooks to outplay Kruger and if he outplays Taurean Green in the Elite 8 matchup, the Ducks could be the surprise Final 4 entry.

In the other games tonight, UNC will take care of USC. And GTown will beat Vandy. And I'll go with a Final 4 prediction of GTown, Fla., OSU, and Kansas.

Randoms:

Matt Schaub to the Texans tells me a couple of things:

1. Brady Quinn is gonna go in the top few picks. If the Texans thought he would still be there, then this trade never would have happened.

2. Petrino better be the offensive genius he's made out to be if he wants to win with Vick at QB. I don't think he is.

3. The Texans will still suck. Can anyone name me someone from their offensive line without looking it up?

As I'm finishing this up OSU is getting killed before halftime. Nice Final 4 picks Smurph.

I just want to let everyone know I'll try and post my thoughts on the OSU-Tenn. game if I have time later today. Just an unbelievable game, with huge shot following huge shot. By far the best game of the tournament.

Loved the debut post Murph.

Other freshman with impacts:
Scottie Reynolds (Nova)
John Sheyer (Duke)
Collins (Kansas)
Curry (Davidson)
Young (georgia tech)
Lopes bros. (stanford)
Budinger (Zona)
Henderson (Duke)
Augistin (texas)

I think Reynolds may be the best point guard of this entire class when it's all said and done. He had that 40 pt game, and carried that team at times

Two comments:

1) I think Crittenton had/will have a bigger impact for GT, and will also be an better NBA player

2) Exactly what impact to Sheyer have for Duke?

Crittenton is the reason why they didn't beat UNLV... turnovers, that 5 second call, etc.. the guy's a bum. He couldn't even just get to the hoop for the "quick 2" that they needed.

Sheyer has that look to him. He's gonna get stronger, and better. He's already a very good shooter, and he actually has an off the dribble game and gets to the hoop better then people think.

Now I know I am not the biggest sports fan out there and this question might be a little out of whack...what is proper ettiquite/behavior at a bar when your team wins and there are several fans of the losing team right next to you?

BTW - Love that this Blog is up...you guys are doing SUPER.

JWS said...

I would say there are a few ways to answer this question.

1.) If they have been overly obnoxious the whole game, a snide remark from you is definitely warranted

2.) If they have been respectful and not annoying to watch with, you must show them the respect they deserve.

When my team loses and someone says something, nothing bothers me more, especially if they have nothing invested on the winning team.

Win with class, lose with class
But if they are classless... let loose!

One more thing... this time of year, I think it makes a difference whether they are real fans or just rooting for their bracket

KatzoRelaxo said...

So let me get this straight...that means you SHOULDN'T pull down your pants and moon the fans of the other team that just lost when "your" team won?

Even if you have no, none, zero, affliation with "your" team and you just happen to be rooting for them because you picked them in your bracket and the other fans were not harming anyone or doing or saying anything out of the ordinary?

This is something your NOT supposed to do? Right?

JWS said...

Yeah that sounds a little overboard to me... wait you're not talkin about our fearless blog leader are you?? I would think he would know better

Agree with katzorelaxo. Even avid ACC fans don't even know who Sheyer is or what impact he has had on Dook. Don't be so Len Biased.

Also, sunny d, have you ever watched a sporting event by yourself? I mean, not just to show people that you like sports, but actually sat down, flipped through the channels and not stopped on Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? (I won't blame you by the way, its a phenomonal show) Figure skating does not count, National Cheerleading Championships do count.

I say take Henderson off the list while your at it! The only significant impact he had was on Tyler Hansborough's face!!

RIPA!

jojo, i think i speak for the majority when i say we're not impressed with your ability to list a bunch of freshman.

many tiers to your additions:

true ballers who made legit impact and would have anywhere: Reynolds, Curry, AugUstin

frosh that are legit and will be very good but "impact" is being used literally and loosely as oppposed to its common use in this context: Collins, Young

the token white guy that doesnt play at duke: Budinger

players names you spelled wrong and didnt deserve to be on the list in the first place: LopeZ bros.

dukies that were actually pretty good but became most noteworthy during unc games for either lighting it up once and still losing or being a terrorist and attacking a national landmark, tyler hansborough's awesomely plain face: Scheyer and Henderson, respectively.

as for sunny's question:

i agree with jojo's class/classless theory...but bottom line, if they're not real fans, they wont care if you're talking sh.t and if they are real fans, and their team just lost (in the tourney or whenever) and they get anywhere as pissed as i do, they are quite volatile. so if they're bigger than me (most are-in size, not height), i'm gonna stay quiet cuz i dont wanna get hendersoned.

Uh, downey, who is your final four? I am now worried that when UNC wins I am not guaranteed the bracket victory.

downey said...

have no fear...im in the bottom 10. and even if my pick of unc over kansas is right and i get oregon in the final four too (my 4th team was louisville)...i probably still dont crack the top 10. with 42 pts now and a max of 83 with everything going my way, i'm probably still mathematically eliminated...especially considering all the chalk lovers ahead of me.

if only tennessee had beaten osu, arizona had beaten florida...or purdue for that matter, duke had beaten vcu and made a run to the elite 8 and a laundry list of other picks gone wrong, i might have had a chance.

whats ur final 4? please say ucla so i got a little hope.

SunnyD-

After enjoying the Hoyas win at the Big East tournament, despite not being a GTown fan, procedure went as followed at the bar:

1. Scream the most popular chant as much as you can. In this case, I flip-flopped between "Hoyaaaaa----Saxaaa" and "JT3"

2. Absolutely tell the loser fan how bad his team is. For example, Brian Scordato can't go left, John Cagianello is skinny, even though the point guard is a stud, that Schur kid looks like Khalid El-Amin. And by the way, your big guy, Devon Bruce, can't seal the deal.

3. Continue chanting and heckling throughout the night and if there are any fans like yourself, be sure to convert them to fans of your own team right away.

3 simple rules to follow when celebrating a team's victory. Feel free to add on.

I also have Roy cutting down the nets and spitting down on Bell Self and all of Lawrence. Thought A&M was gonna work out for me but somehow Memphis keeps killing me. And I have Florida.

I say Jay Wright at Kentucky. Any thoughts, fellas? Also I am very sad as it looks as though my hometown team Creighton will likely lose Altman to Iowa. Watch out for Iowa in four years. Mark my words.

I'm gunna go with Billy Gilliespie...I have no idea who it will be, but that's just my shot in the dark.
